Coralina in Costa Rica – Natural Stone of Coral Origin
La coralina in Costa Rica is a natural stone of coral origin, known for its organic texture and its pale tone. It is a favourite on tropical facades, garden walls, coralina around pools and coastal finishes. It is also called piedra coralina, or in the plural piedras coralinas.

What is Coralina?
Coralina is a limestone formed from coral sediment, with a porous, richly textured surface. Its pale colour reflects light and makes a space feel larger, which is why it is a favourite in tropical and coastal architecture.

Coralina performs excellently in sunny, exposed areas — pools, pool edges and terraces in full sun — where water dries fast. It is widely used in Guanacaste, Puntarenas and along the coast, as well as in San José, Escazú and Santa Ana. In areas of shade it needs more care (see maintenance below).

Coralina in Sun and in Shade: Care and Maintenance
Coralina is excellently in sunny, exposed areas — pools, pool edges and terraces in full sun — because water dries fast. Beside a pool its porosity is an advantage: it absorbs the water and stays cool underfoot, without heating up much in the sun. For the edges you use the bullnose piece (rounded edge). In contrast, in shaded areas it needs considerably more maintenance: being porous, moisture lingers and you can get mould or fungus.
So outdoors, and above all in shade, coralina must be sealed with a topping sealer that closes the pores at the surface. Penetrating sealers get used up quickly — and every pressure wash opens the pores further— so with coralina the practical answer is to apply and reapply a topping sealer. The faster water dries once the pores are closed, the better it keeps.
Two answers for coralina in shade
- Fill the pores with grout and polish: every pore is sealed so water dries faster and the surface is easier to keep clean. It ends up a little more slippery, so it suits shaded walkways and steps, where staying clean for longer matters.
- Use precast coralina: a densified, factory-sealed product that reaches the same result — a sealed, dense surface — preventing mould from taking hold.
Installation
We recommend a high-bond mortar over a level surface and, given its porosity, a penetrating sealer outdoors. See the installation guide.
- Clean with water and a soft brush; avoid acidic chemicals
- Use a topping sealer that closes the pores (penetrating sealers get used up quickly)
- Every pressure wash opens the pores: reapply the topping
- In shade: fill and polish the pores, or use precast coralina (includes the bullnose piece)
