Thin stone veneer panels in Costa Rica

Stone Veneer Panels in Costa Rica: Types, Colours and Uses

In Costa Rica a thin stone wall panel is called a fachaleta. It is a format, not a material — you can get it in natural stone and in manufactured stone alike.

That is the thing most comparisons get wrong. The real choice is not "panel or stone", it is manufactured or natural.

In natural stone

Veneer panels are cut from Piedra Laja in yellow, white, black, red, jade green, two-tone, wood-look and pizarra; from mollejón; from sánchez; and from coralina.

In manufactured stone

Every Deco Rock line is effectively a veneer panel system — thin enough to fix over render, with the crucial addition of matching corner pieces. See QuickFit, ThinStone and the brick styles.

Installation

Panels go on over cured, clean render with Bondex or Deco Rock mortar, much like tile. Start at the corners and work along the flats, alternating piece lengths so no visible pattern repeats. See the installation guide.

Frequently asked questions

What is a fachaleta?

The Costa Rican term for a thin stone wall panel. It is a format rather than a material — both natural and manufactured stone are supplied as veneer panels.

Is a stone veneer panel the same as manufactured stone?

No. Panel describes the thin format; manufactured describes how the stone was made. You can buy natural stone panels and manufactured stone panels.

What colours are available?

In natural laja: yellow, white, black, red, jade green, two-tone, wood-look and pizarra. In manufactured lines, tone is cast to an approved sample.

Can veneer panels be used outside?

Yes, both types. For heavy exposure choose laja among the natural stones, or any of the manufactured lines.
