Mollejón: Porosity and Maintenance

Mollejón is a very porous stone — it in fact needs more maintenance than coralina. It performs very well on walls and vertical surfaces (where water runs off) and also as polished floors (see below). To last outdoors it must be sealed with a high-quality topping sealer. That is an investment which can approach the cost of the stone itself, but it is the one that makes the difference. Sealed properly it holds for several years; after that you only need to reapply the sealer.

Careful with pressure washing: if you pressure wash, do it from a distance, gently, and at the first sign of dirt — never aggressively. A hard jet lifts the sealer and opens the pores. Better to clean early, with water and a soft brush.

The grout is the weak point: on porous stone the grout stains, and in very tight joints algae takes hold. Using rectangular formats, sometimes ungrouted (a dry joint) cuts maintenance sharply and lets you run a full stone wall without trouble. We also supply Mollejón dust for grouting mixed with cement, which saves against bagged grout.

Polished Mollejón floors: unlike coralina — whose large pores have to be filled with grout before grinding — Mollejón can be polished (the surface ground back) to a fine finish, taken to perfection and sealed with a topping sealer. The result is floors of a very high standard, with no grout, ideal in a rectangular format.
